I’ve had some lovely feedback on the lirralirra 2014 Calendar, it’s been awesome to read such kind emails and I hope the calendars give pleasure throughout 2014. As 100% of the profits are going to the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater I thought today’s post should show one of these beautiful birds.
Helmeted Honeyeater with spider
Canon 7D, 100-400mm L IS USM, 1/130, f/5.6, ISO 320
This exquisite honeyeater is one of a small number of these birds surviving in the wild. Helmeted Honeyeaters are Critically Endangered and Zoos Victoria are helping to boost their numbers with a captive breeding program at Healesville Sanctuary. During October twelve captive bred honeyeaters were carefully released into the wild. A friend and I are part of the volunteer group that braves the mossies and leeches to provide supplementary feeding to help these birds establish themselves in the wild; the local spiders aren’t so thrilled about their arrival.
I hope your 2014 is full of birdsong and happiness, Kim

hi kim

i wish you a good end of the year, and see you in 2014 ;)))
cheers, eric

Keep up the great work! And that photo is stunning 🙂
Many thanks Craig!
A beautiful photo of a stunning bird. I hope the efforts to establish an active breeding group in the wild is successful.
Thanks heaps Dave. You’ve made me think it would be good to post updates every so often about how they are faring.
Beautiful photo Kim, imagine having a spider in your mouth and letting someone take your photo. I can imagine the spider moving around in the birds mouth, except for the legs in the beak, good on you for arranging ‘meals on wheels’ for the newcomers in the wild.
Your comment made me laugh aloud Carole! The thought of having a spider in my mouth is bizarre, you have an amazing imagination and a very graphic description to go with it. ‘Meals on wheels’ – haha 🙂
Hello Kim
very very beautiful bird !!!! <3
Big kiss 😉
I’m so glad you like the bird Nathalie 🙂
What a beautiful bird. I love its colors. Gorgeous photo, Kim!

Love the calendar – and opened it yesterday because I couldn’t wait any longer.
I so hope that your work with the honeyeater is a HUGE success. Every bird saved is a big plus.
And I love this photo. While not spider phobic, I do prefer the birds…
