Duckling

This could be the cutest, most comical duckling expression I’ve ever seen.

Maned Duck (Australian Wood Duck) – (Chenonetta jubata)

This duckling was at a small local pond with its parents and four siblings. Plenty of people walked straight past them as they were snuggled so low in the grass that they were barely visible.

I was snuggled flat on the grass myself, which gave me an intimate view of the little family. Occasionally the sun would peek out from between the clouds and light up one of the babies. I was super lucky that this one was lit up just as it glanced towards me with this adorably quizzical expression on its sweet face.

I am still not home from my trips. It’s a reverse lockdown situation as I need to stay away from home while my lovely family recover from the dreaded lurgy. It feels awful not to be able to help them, even the twin babies are unwell. Hopefully I will be home some time over the weekend. As soon as I’m there, and I get the chance, I’ll get to work on the calendar. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had some wonderful photography opportunities that I’ll be adding to the calendar; hopefully it’s not too late for people to want to order.

Happy birding, Kim

So very precious! A wonderful shot. I hope all will be clear to return from lockout soon xo

  • A complete heart melter. Thank you.
I hope your family recover quickly.
And am so looking forward to seeing more photos from your trip.

Thank you EC. I’m keen to share some of the species I rarely see but in the meantime I’m enjoying spending time with the ducklings.

A very charming photo, Kim. I love the darker brown tip of his beak – it looks like he’s been sipping a mug of cocoa! Or would that be his egg tooth, that helps him escape the egg when he’s hatching?
I do love ducks – they seem so pleased with themselves, and proud to be ducks. I also love their comical waddle. So much more appealing than the jerky movements of chooks. Ducklings are as heartwarming as puppies!

Thanks heaps Deirdre. Sipping a mug of cocoa is what I’m just about to do. The tiny egg tooth is just to the side of the ‘cocoa’. Ducklings are seriously gorgeous for sure!
