Eagle and kangaroo

Wedge-tailed Eagles flew over my place recently, not as closely as the one in this week’s portrait unfortunately!

They are truly magnificent birds. This one is probably fairly young as so many of its feathers are still brown; these eagles darken with age.

I often find myself wondering what a bird is thinking and the intense look in this one’s eye definitely makes me curious. I generally use f/5.6 (a wider open aperture with a narrower depth of field) for my bird photographs but this eagle is so huge (and I was fairly close to it) that only its eye would have been in focus. Everything closer to the camera or further from the eye would have been blurry.

Most lirralirra readers probably know that many of my photographs are used to promote bird conservation and awareness. I also try to help other species when the opportunity arises, including kangaroos – please visit the Victorian Kangaroo Alliance for more information on this brilliant group: vickangas.org One of my photographs is currently being used as a banner for this page.

This week I’ve entered the World Kangaroo Day photography competition, with the photograph above. I like photographing wildlife when it’s behaving naturally, preferably unaware that I’m lying in the grass watching it greet the morning sun. If you like this photograph too I’d be rapt if you’d vote for it here: www.worldkangarooday.org/photography – thank you!
