Such a beautiful ibis and I could hardly believe the stunning pose.
I was rapt to spend some time lurking in the wetlands this week. I don’t see Glossy Ibis as often as I see the Australian White Ibis or the Straw-necked Ibis so it was an extra pleasure to watch this beautiful bird as it shook and stretched. The iridescent colours in its wings are exquisite and it looks so elegant with its long legs and curved bill.
I’d like to introduce to a special guest this week, a gorgeous nine year old who goes by the nickname ‘Lettuce’. She’s going to tell you about the challenge I’ve set for her.
Hi, my challenge is if I get 100 Australian bird field guide IDs right I will get given $100. Right now I’m writing them down in sections like penguins, parrots and backyard birds. I know tons but I am up to 31 in the list. I’ll inform you when I get $100. I am really excited. Happy IDing! lettuce
I think I might be $100 poorer before she is ten!
Happy birding, stay safe, Kim

Sounds cheap, but you can’t put a price on fostering a love of our beautiful wildlife. I look back with fondness and gratitude on my childhood experiences in the Gould League.
I wish the Gould League or the Field Nats or something similar was promoted in schools the way it used to be. Hmmm… maybe that’s a challenge worth working on! Imagine we could set a 100 bird ID challenge with a prize for PS children…
Now that’s the seed of a brilliant idea! That would certainly help preserve future wildlife generations, maybe Zoos would partner… Even you started with 50 and increased to pro level š That would change our world… hmm….
Do you have any ideas about how it could work Syndy?
Worth considering… perhaps a suggestion to some of the groups already functioning, people with contacts in the right places… no point reinventing the wheel. I’ll have to consider that some more, maybe even groups connecting with their local schools… imagine a global movement to revive interest, awareness and compassion.
My grandson has just moved to Lysterfield South, loves roaming Churchill/Lysterfield parks and fascinated with every bird and flower – he’s 18 months – that’s my start. We can all cultivate interest within those around us, just start. Go Lettuce!
Yes, that’s a good idea, a great idea actually! Your grandson might like the photograph I shared of the Brown Goshawk that was released at Churchill National Park, he might see it flying around. I’ll pass your message on to Lettuce š
What a pretty bird. And GO LETTUCE!!! You can do it!
They really are beautiful Tess, thank you, and thank you from Lettuce too!
She certainly is a hard worker so she will get there very soon I think!
Lovely photo!
I think you’re right and so does Lettuce!
Love that spectacular Ibis – and am so glad that you could get back to the wetlands.
Congratulations Lettuce – I am quite confident that many people much older than you wouldn’t be able to get 31 birds identified correctly. Their loss.
It was great to be out and about again. Lettuce says hi and thanks and I’m also going to work on some more today.
