Great Egret

At this time of year I always find myself in a reflective mood; this egret seems to symbolise that feeling.

I know the Great Egret is peering into the shallow waters of the ocean at the edge of Werribee’s Western Treatment Plant, but it’s also staring into its future. Will a fish come within striking distance, will it be catchable? Should the egret stay there or try something new?

The sun was almost setting and I love the warm, soft glow on the water.

People are often a bit confused when identifying egrets. The Great Egret is significantly larger than the Intermediate, Cattle, Little and the less common Eastern Reef Egret. Its neck has an obvious kink, and, if you are close enough, you’ll notice that its gape extends beyond its eye.

I wish all lirralirra readers an especially wonderful and fulfilling 2020 –  a year filled with love, kindness, adventures, strength, contentment and plenty of birdsong.

Happy birding

Kim
