I prefer to take images of birds on natural perches but often they don’t oblige. Someties images on non-natural perches can still be pleasing.
Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena)
Canon 7D, 100-400mm L IS USM, 1/640, f/5.6, ISO 200, focal length 370mm
Welcome Swallows are pretty little birds that are more often seen darting around the skies taking mosquitos and other bugs in flight. The bird in the image above has a tiny, bright green inch worm attached to its belly feathers.
Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena)
Canon 7D, 100-400mm L IS USM, 1/500, f/5.6, ISO 640, focal length 350mm
The juvenile Welcome Swallow in the image above was waiting patiently for the parent bird to bring food. It landed on a verandah railing and I had to move backwards as it was too close to focus on with the long lens. Its feathers are fluffed as it was busy preening when it looked straight towards the camera.

I liked the lighting on this little group of Welcome Swallows on a natural perch. I wish I’d been able to creep a little closer before they started hawking again. The blurred sand, sea and sky are visible in the background.
Happy birding, Kim
NB I am still experimenting with resolution and watermarking because of issues with image theft.
Like you I prefer natural perches Kim but there are times that other perches can be appealing too. Love the group of swallows and the single Welcome Swallow!
Thank you Mia. Sometimes I think I should nail a nice bit of driftwood to the verandah railing!
wonderfull close up, woow, impressives pictures !!

Thank you Eric 🙂
Hello Kim…your photos are looking fantastic, so sharp, the little birds look like they are just about to jump off the screen.
Glad that you have joined the PICC.
The PICC Facebook page is looking very busy now that heaps of members have joined the group….the new Forum just started up today too.
I think that I was the first to sign up…haven’t used it yet.
Look forward to catching up with you in person, maybe at the next meeting.
