This year’s mystery quiz birds are all from the Mallee, half of them are honeyeaters – I think focussing on a specific area is something I should have done before! Each photograph shows the complete bird but without showing its complete face. Some have hidden hints if you look closely.
I won’t share comments until the identification parade next week. You are welcome to comment anonymously or using a pseudonym if you’d like to.
Although I photographed all eight of these birds in the Mallee several of them can be found in other places too. Number 5 is particularly ubiquitous.
Happy birding and good luck with the mystery quiz, Kim

Hi Kim, the honeyeaters are beyond me but I’m confident about the Malleefowl! I looked back at some of the other quizzes and especially enjoyed the feathers and eyeballs. Thankyou for this, Janie
Thanks for having a go Janie, well done with the Malleefowl.
I think this is the hardest one yet. 1 yellow tufted honeyeater 2 brown headed honeyeater 3 Apostlebird 4 Willie wagtail 6 red wattlebird 7 Malleefowl 8 grasswren. How did I go?
I think you’re right Teena, it was horribly hard, by accident. You did well, check next week’s post for the answers.
Those Honeyeaters are all too difficult for me as I can only just tell the differences from head on! I know number 7 is a Malleefowl but I cannot even guess the others. Sorry!
What’s most embarrassing Dave is that they’re too hard for me too without checking the photographs around them :/
I think the last one is a spinifex grasswren or striated grasswren. I looked in my bird book for help. The second to last one is a mallee fowl. Is the first one a yellow tufted honeyeater and the black and white one a willie wagtail? Pretty sure the one on the ground is an apostle bird.
Your answers are great Tess. Check next week’s post for all the answers, Kim
I always love your mystery quizzes though I am woefully bad at them. I will be watching for next week’s post.
Oh how did I miss your comment EC! My apologies. I was woefully bad at this one myself, which is quite hilariously ridiculous.
