The long and winding road

Little Miss Six is having a sleep-over tonight and this is the bird she wanted to share. It is an extremely tiny thornbill fluffing its feathers after bathing.

Striated Thornbill (Acanthiza lineata)

Striated Thornbills, at 10cm and 7g, could fit in the palm of your hand without you knowing they were there. It staggers me to know that it would take six or seven of them to weigh the same as a hen’s egg. I’ve always loved their cheek feathers that remind me of snowflakes, and the finely filamented striations through their russet brown crown.

I especially like the shot above, it always makes me start singing ‘The long and winding road…’ Sorry to dash away so quickly but I need to know that the little one is sleeping soundly.

Happy birding, Kim
